It’s always a good feeling to find something worth investing in, and that extends to TV shows. Fans of their favorite show spend a lot of time theorizing the course of the show and, of course, trying to figure out what happens to their favorite character.
Whether they’re sitcoms, fantasy or drama series, investing in a show is a risk and viewers expect a payoff. So when their favorite character reverts to old ways or stumbles into an illogical and rushed character arc, viewers turn away disappointed, taking to websites like Reddit to air their grievances.
1 Jim Halpert
by Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) story for most the office A show centered on love for Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer) and his quiet quest to win her over, fans were rightfully disappointed when the two married only to grow Jim’s selfish character and create unnecessary friction.
u/missy_moo_moo she wrote, “Jim, who idolized and loved Pam so much, felt so compelled to buy a ring in a week, choosing a sleazy career in Philadelphia and ignoring his family.” u/Olgil75 he agreed, writing that it “felt wildly unrealistic and seemed like they were trying to throw in a bit of drama at the end to tie in with the story of the film crew.”
2 Britta Perry
Good presentation though the community by Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs) intelligence was quickly replaced by incompetence. His stupidity became the butt of all jokes, and his name was used to describe making mistakes or messing up.
u/inhereforthemeta he reflected on the problem underlying this characterization, “Britta went from being a troublemaker to being very dumb because the audience didn’t like her when she was able to never sit down with me.” As I said u/MightyThoreau“they made it so dirty by turning it into the Nickelback of the show.”
3 Jon Snow
Meanwhile Game of Thrones fans will agree that most of the show’s characters didn’t get the arcs they deserved, with Redditors having specific concerns with the way Lord Commander was characterized. Starting the show as a warrior, Jon Snow (Kit Harington) character development (or perhaps character regression) concerned his character with a romance that fans said lacked chemistry.
u/lostmonkey70 wrote, “they tried to make him a tragic hero against his will, making his way in front of the woman he loved. The problem is that he and Dany had no chemistry at all, so it came off as opposites.” u/CouncilmanRickPrime he suggests that this is simply because he “doesn’t know anything”.
4 Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock It has always been a divisive series. Viewers love the show’s wit and the dynamic between Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) or hate Sherlock’s pretentiousness and how he treats those around him. In this case, Sherlock watchers were quick to argue the latter, suggesting that Sherlock’s character development was so poor that it hindered the quality of the show.
Speaking of Sherlock’s portrayal of addictions, u/TheSpaghettiEmperor he wrote, “his addictions being a real vice [messed] lifting him up and having Watson save the day worked fine, why did we need the “everything Sherlock’s 5000 IQ plan” tour for the umpteenth time?” u/spinereader81 he agreed, “I don’t mind that one bit, but it eclipsed detection in the end.”
5 Ted Mosby
They gave it for a show that tells the facts How I Met Your Mother starring Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) to meet the mother of his children, it seems that the disclosure of these facts actually caused the character to disintegrate. With the failure of each new romantic endeavor, some fans have concluded that perhaps Ted was the problem, insisting that he never cared about these women as much as he wanted the end of his quest.
Redditor u/Blue_Swirling_Bunny he writes, “the more Ted learns about how he met his mother, the more I think Ted…doesn’t care who he marries, as long as he marries. someone…but eventually we learn that Ted is just a desperate loser who hits on women because he doesn’t want a woman with personality, he wants a mannequin on his arm.”
6 Jamie Lannister
Until the final episodes of the show, fans will accept that Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) with the arc lit Game of Thrones it was, if not, the best of the show. Things were looking up for Prince Charming’s doppelganger, who found true friendship in characters like Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and was no longer known as the man who pulled Bran Stark out of the tower window.
But despite finally leaving his incestuous and toxic relationship with Cersei Lannister behind (Lena Headey), Redditor u/polojeff he writes, “the end undid all the steps he had taken toward redemption.”
7 Mr. Ben Chang
In a seemingly endless list of eccentric and eccentric professors at Greendale Community College, Mr. Ben Chang (Ken Jeong) was the biggest. His unlikely role as a Spanish teacher gave his character inherent fun and the ability to abuse his authority in hilarious ways. u/Pabsxv writes, “Being an unqualified authority figure was a great character for him. Trying to fake his own way as a Spanish teacher did great things.”
But, as the Redditor pointed out u/evremonde, “went from being a funny figure because he was an authority figure to a less funny peer of the group.” As I said u/RazorOfSimplicity“The rest of the series just made him a flanderized lunatic who didn’t take anyone seriously.”
8 Amy Sosa
as the protagonist of Superstore throughout most of the series, Amy’s romantic relationships, specifically with her co-worker Jonah, have always played a major role. As a result, her slow relationship with Jonah was one of the biggest aspects of the show and fans came to root for her, believing that after all their tribulations, the two would end the show. Cloud 9.
However, America FerreraHer exit from the show complicated the couple’s happy ending, adding unnecessary complications to their relationship and, in the process, portraying Amy as selfish and quick to abandon the relationship she fostered for so many years. u/Noltonn wrote: “She fell deeply in love with Jonah…[to] tearing her family apart because she doesn’t want to marry this man she’s been dating and living with for so long?” She added that they ruined “every romantic development they’d done in 5 years.
9 Louis Litt
Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman) was a character suits fans loved to hate at first. His tense persona and deep opinions perfectly match Harvey Specter’s calmness, composure and collectedness. As is often the case with characters like Louis, his personality was seen as a problem to be solved, leading to an unknown character arc that sees him also go from ruthless to, well, not.
Redditor u/pugwalker writes, “he had such a terrible arc at the beginning that they couldn’t help but spoil him. That part where you realize how talented the lawyer is is one of my favorite parts of the show. It’s a shame he had to turn around. He became a complete clown after they ran out of other interesting material.”
10 Andy Bernard
Few characters the office They are as divisive as Andy Bernard (Ed Helms). While his early antics were often infuriating, highly relatable, even if he sang out of time, he was ultimately harmless. However, most fans of the show agree that, despite earlier attempts to develop and improve his character, Andy fell victim to serious character regression when they made him the “Michael stand-in”.
