With everything from groceries to streaming services getting more expensive, the cost of doing business seems to be catching up with everyone, and it’s making its way into consumers’ wallets. And the latest service to raise prices is YouTube TV. The service announced today, via a Twitter thread, that they will be adjusting the monthly cost from $64.99 to $72.99 per month.

As a rationale, YouTube TV Twitter account said that “as we continue to increase content costs and invest in the quality of our service, we will adjust our monthly cost… to provide the best television service possible.” The last time YouTube TV adjusted its price was three years ago, in 2020, when the fee went from $50 to $64.99 per month. When the service launched in 2017, the price was $35.00 per month.

What is YouTube TV?

YouTube TV is a streaming network launched in 2017 that offers on-demand and multi-channel video programming. Among the streaming services available, it is perhaps the most similar to cable services, providing viewers with linear online programming. A price increase in 2020 added HBO Max and a Cinemax add-on, giving subscribers access to HBO Max along with YouTube TV. HBO Max has also seen price hikes recently, as Collider previously reported, along with Paramount+ raising subscription prices for the first time.

Some viewers believe the latest price hike is due to YouTube’s new streaming deal with NFL Sunday Ticket. However, that was not the motivation expressed by the network’s latest announcement. Instead, YouTube TV said they are “…committed to providing a premium way to stream TV.” However, they “…understand that this new price may not work for you. We hope YouTube TV remains your service of choice, but we want to give you the flexibility to cancel at any time.” The door is basically right there.

The decision to raise prices may lead to a decline in subscribers, but regardless of that reality, price hikes seem to have become more and more prevalent among streaming services in recent years. Like in Collider Liam Gaughan As he reported more than a month ago, it looks like the streaming bubble may soon burst, but in the meantime, “continued price increases and spending indulgences will force viewers to opt out of their service subscriptions, which could have dire consequences for the future of the entertainment market.” what the consequences would be remains to be seen.

The monthly fee for YouTube TV will increase from $64.99 per month to $72.99 per month starting April 18, 2023.
