In the beginning Scream 4 (2011), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) sits next to his laptop with a blank page, stuck with writer’s block. He angrily writes, “I have no damn idea what to write.” Ghostface’s return brings a new body count and, fingers crossed, an increased word count for Gale’s new book. good The shining valley, Courteney Cox is back in a horror comedy, swapping the premise for a supernatural slasher. The Starz series nods to horror favorites, for example shine (1980), despite being Cox’s showcase as a versatile actor. For those who feel Gale limits their screen time too much Scream VI (2023), The shining valley She lets Courteney Cox in on her dramatic and comedic chops, and when she lets out a scream of horror, she says she’ll never lose her Scream Queen crown.
‘Shining Vale’ evokes something old and something new
Patricia “Pat” Phelps (Cox) moves her family into an empty mansion in the community of Shining Vale. It’s a fresh start for everyone, but especially for Pat, since she cheated on her bubbly husband Terry (Greg Kinnear). Their socially awkward son Jake (Dylan Gage) loves his backyard, not for the nature, but for the space to explore while using his VR headset. And their daughter Gaynor (Gus Birney) is filled with angst that he will do much to upset his mother. The Phelps family has enough to deal with the move, and they don’t even realize it’s haunted, it’s Pat who meets their ghostly neighbor Rosemary (Mira Sorvino), with big plans for matriarch Phelps. Why not move? Well, financial reasons and because Pat needs Rosemary, even if it costs him dearly.
In the first episode, a passage reads: “Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression.” Then the symptoms are added, including hallucinations and a feeling of helplessness, before continuing with another passage: “Women are also about twice as likely to be possessed by a demon,” before adding, “the symptoms are the same.” This opening sets the tone and Cox continues with his dominant and abrasive character. Pat was a wild child and found fame by writing an erotic female empowerment novel. Since then, success has dwindled and Pat is in need of another big hit. In addition to being a struggling writer, she can fill a family-vow bucket on her own as a stressed-out mother and irresponsible spouse. To make matters worse, Pat also has a family history of addiction and mental illness. Who is a lot for anyone to deal with, but Pat’s abrasive personality assures the audience that he can take care of himself, until he can’t.
Courteney Cox finds a new meaning in Ghost Writing
What really gets in the way of his fresh start are encounters with resident ghost and 50s housewife Rosemary, who knows how to push Pat’s self-destruct buttons. By allowing himself to be possessed, Pat is writing what can sell quickly. But Rosemary is not the creative muse; he can be petty when he doesn’t get what he wants. And then there’s the matter of Rosemary possibly being a demonic entity. But Pat is so stubborn, he sees no danger. When Rosemary tries to confess to Pat that she has considered killing her family, Pat mocks her. “I’m the mother, of course!” he shouts back. Despite Rosemary’s dark agenda, Pat is very focused on making this new book a success, no matter the risk. What is a small possession in the grand scheme of things? To paraphrase Gale Weathers from ’96, do you know what that could do to his book sales?
The shining valley it’s not just a haunting, it’s also generational trauma, addiction and mental health. Gaynor and their teenage daughter Pat don’t see eye to eye, the moments they do are fleeting, and it’s all part of a cycle. Judith Light She enters as Pat’s mother, Joan. The two have had an amazing relationship since Pat put her in a temporary mental hospital years ago. Although Joan still loves her daughter, she has never forgiven her for that, and with the humor of the show, all of this becomes clear in seconds. As Pat tries to leave Joan’s house, her mother continues the conversation, bringing up the forced hospital stay by describing: “Where you left me. When you engaged me. Against my will.’ And then when Pat gets to the door, Joan calls out to him: “Ring me when you get home so I know you made it safe!”
Cox is certainly up to the challenge of complicated fights The shining valley. There is nothing in common between Pat and obsessive-compulsive Monica friends; Pat is much closer to the ruthless, goal-oriented diva Gale Weathers, but in everything Shout the film gets a reality check. Except there’s no big moment for Pat Phelps, any reality check comes too late. His abrasive nature catches up to him in the final minutes of the Season 1 finale. Cox’s performance portrays Pat in a frenzied, panicked state, and she plays the hell out of it.
All work and no play makes Patty a boring girl
Co-creators Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan never hide the influence of their show shine. It’s everywhere, from the title, to the Overlook Hotel’s iconic carpet pattern curtains, to the dates stamped on the screen and a transition. And, of course, there’s Pat, who recreates various moments, with varying results Stephen King adaptation Usually in a haunted house like this, it’s the husband and father who are forced to move in with a new family because of their problems. seen in the year shine with attacker Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) and AHS: Murder House With Ben Harmon Cheating (Dylan McDermott). Without the cheating aspect, even Craig T. Nelson in the year poltergeist (1982) was the reason his family lived in his haunted house, thanks to a real estate job. good The shining valleythe mother and the wife are to blame.
This genre shift subverts the aforementioned “mother figure” of horror content. Pat Phelps doesn’t have the warmth of Wendy Torrance (Shelley Duvall), who tries so hard to put her son’s needs above an angry husband. Pat has a more toxic reckless attitude than Diane Freeling (JoBeth Williams), who jumps for joy when she realizes that ghosts can move kitchen chairs and smokes a joint with her husband in the bedroom. And Pat is not as under attack as Vivian Harmon (Connie Britton), in Murder House, is haunted by her husband’s mistress and violent paranormal activity in the house. Pat isn’t going to win Mother of the Year any time soon, nor does she really care. When Pat tries to replicate Rosemary’s facade of sweetness one morning, her family reacts with confusion or on their daughter’s behalf, angry at her getting the lunch money. So, naturally, Pat reverts back to her old self: “Jesus screw Gaynor, I gave you free money, just say thank you.”
There’s no better time to binge-watch every episode of this Starz series Garrasi Vl out and The shining valley Season 2 coming soon. Courteney Cox will be able to block Ghostface in case an assassin takes the costume and attacks. At least he can get away with it in other ways, including making big moves from traveling from Woodsboro to New York. In The shining valley, Cox can’t leave the large, haunted mansion for long, bringing back his desires, because maybe this time will be different for him. But sorry Pat, that’s not how the supernatural works, especially when what you’re encountering might be something from the abyss of Hell.
