The last episode of The last of us It added a whole new dimension to Joel’s personality. In recent episodes, we’ve seen Joel and Ellie grow closer thanks to the latter’s jokes and instinct to survive. But as their bond grows stronger, so do Joel’s fears. In a new behind-the-scenes film, the cast and crew talk about bringing those fears to life.

“Trying to save someone and then failing is a terrible feeling and it’s actually a feeling Joel soaks in every day because he’s terrified it will happen to him again,” explained the co-creator. “There’s this beautiful moment where Joel stumbles outside, and he thinks he sees his daughter. I had sleepless nights in that scene.” Mazin then adds:

“Ellie admits she’s scared and she’s less scared, and what Joel doesn’t know how to tell her is that she’s more scared when you care about something or someone, that’s when the fear happens.”
