“When you care about something or someone, that’s when fear arises.”
The last episode of The last of us It added a whole new dimension to Joel’s personality. While he was physically fearless in the games, the show adds the vulnerability of being human to his character. In recent episodes, we’ve seen Joel and Ellie grow closer thanks to the latter’s jokes and instinct to survive. But as their bond grows stronger, so do Joel’s fears. In a new behind-the-scenes film, the cast and crew talk about bringing those fears to life.
“Trying to save someone and then failing is a terrible feeling and it’s actually a feeling Joel soaks in every day because he’s terrified it will happen to him again,” explained the co-creator. Craig Mazin. From the beginning, we see Joel unable to cope with the loss of his daughter Sarah, which hardens him in the post-apocalyptic world, Mazin adds: “He is shot, punched, kicked, and he cannot understand what he cannot understand. the experience of losing again and that’s what Ellie is becoming.’ Bella Ramsey he adds, “Ellie doesn’t do relationships easily, especially because the relationships she’s built have been cruelly taken away from her and that’s where Joel and her are the same.”
“The incredible thing was to be able to explore things that I think are very much a part of the game experience but that you can expand on. One of those things is the inner life of these characters, he says Peter Pascal about the evolution of his character. Meanwhile, we’ve seen Joel go from a tough guy who reluctantly agrees to take a girl across the US to a man who’s terrified that he won’t be able to protect her. Ass Neil Druckmann he explained, “With the performance, it was added as if he was having a physical reaction. He can’t breathe, his chest hurts.” Also, “it’s a combination of his age, but also all the events that have just happened and his connection with Ellie. He’s very scared and Ellie doesn’t really understand what’s going on with him.” Joel describes his need to save everyone around him ” Joel has this goal where he thinks he has to go save his brother and then he gets to Jackson. He doesn’t have to save his brother, he’s raising his brother.”
“There’s this beautiful moment where Joel stumbles outside, and he thinks he sees his daughter. We love that he would think for a moment, for a moment and then he would see him with his daughter, and he would think ‘I wish I had that’”, says Mazin about the moment Joel is having a partial. panic attack after the first conversation with Tommy. Gabriel Luna adds: “We always try to keep his spirit in the scene, I think he’s always a ghost in the room between Joel and Tommy.”
Speaking about recreating the iconic Joel and Ellie plot from the first game, Mazin stated, “That scene is probably the most famous scene in the game. We did it almost exactly, we changed a few things here and there, but the overall execution felt very important. It was something that I really wanted to keep.” Both Pascal and Ramsey shine on stage as they confess their fears to each other, Ramsey reveals: “Me and Pedro both really felt the pressure of that and when you feel too pressured into something, you create yourself. when you have it can be difficult to do it the way you want. I had sleepless nights in that scene.” Mazin then adds:
“Ellie admits she’s scared and she’s less scared, and what Joel doesn’t know how to tell her is that she’s more scared when you care about something or someone, that’s when the fear happens.”
